MEDITATION & POSITIVE THINKING

Before I tell you how to do the Meditation,let’s first understand the dictionary meaning of word”Meditation”.If you open the dictionary to find the meaning of word “Meditation”,you will find that the origin of this word has come from a latin root meditari which means ‘to contemplate’.And,to contemplate means’to think carefully about’.

Similarly,let’s explore the origin of Hindi translation of Meditation i.e.’DHYAN’.This word has its origin in Sanskrit root ‘DHYAE CHINTAYAM’which again means ‘to think deeply ‘ or ‘to contemplate’.

Now,the big question is “To Contemplate on What?”,”To Think Deeply on What?”So,in order to do the Meditation,you should have a ‘Subject’,you should have a set of thoughts,you should have a chain of thoughts to focus upon.

If the subject or topic chosen by you is NEGATIVE,then the process of contemplation with your eyes closed is not Meditation,Rather, the
Process in that case could be called CHINTA or WORRY.

But,if the topic chosen by you in the process of contemplation is POSITIVE,then the process is said to be Meditation.

So,there is an inseperable link between Meditation and Positive Thinking.If your behaviour is Positive,then your thinking is positive and then it is far easier for you to practice Meditation regularly.
And,if you practice Meditation regularly on Positive Subjects,then your thinking starts to become more & more Positive & as a result your behaviour starts reflecting a Positive Personality.

WATCH WHAT YOU SPEAK

Are you sleeping at the moment?Obviously not,because you are involved in readindg.So,when you are not sleeping,what state you may be said to be in?Yes! you can be said to be in ‘awakened’ state or ‘conscious’ state of mind.When you are at this ‘conscious’ level,what’s going on in your mind?At conscious level,your mind is involved in ‘thinking’.Have you ever tried to be ‘aware’of your thinking?Oh!yet another silly question?now this question is not at all silly.For,you really need to be aware of your thinking pattern.You really need to peep into your thoughts.Why?because ,first thing you need to know about your “thinking pattern” is that the thoughts running in your mind can be categorised into two streams.Would you ,now,like to guess or should i tell you?Ok,now let’s get down to serious business.

The thoughts running in your mind can be categorised as eighter positive or negative.If you keep on thinking positive thoughts,what is the possibility of your speech & actions to be positive?And,if you keep thinking negative thoughts,what is the possibility of your speech & actions to be negative?I’m sure you agree with me that this possibility is 100%.Yes!if you think’ positive’,you will speak ‘positive’& your actions will also be ‘positive’.

Now, let’s take this in the reverse order.let’s examine what happens when you speak positive in the first place.?Ok,when you speak positive to someone else,say two feet apart from you,who is the first person to listen to what you have spoken?You or the other person?Before giving an answer,please remember that your ‘ear’ is only three inches apart ftom your mouth while the other person is two feet away from you.So,obviously,you are the first person to listen to what you have just spoken.so,who is going to be influenced the most by what you speak.Naturally,you & only you are going to be influenced the most by what you speak.

What ensures that you carry Positive Thoughts with you?It’s what you hear!It’s what you read! It’s what actions you take!It’s what kind of people you are with most of the time.So,should you forget that you are the first person to hear what you speak?Should you forget that it’s your whole body that resonates with the vibrations of your speech?Actually,the words you speak are instrumental in building or rather rebuilding your thoughts.

When someone asks you,”How are you?”your response could eighter be ,”I’m fine,thank you.”or,it could be,”Oh!just pulling around,there is no electricity,no infrastructure,no roads,no water supply,------------.”or it could be,”There are problems ,but we are working hard to get over them.”

Now,you can choose to speak a response ,listening to which could benefit you the most.

If two unknown people meet in a hot summer,at a railway platform,how would they strike a conversation?It could be,”Oh!it’s too hot here.it seems unending during these summers.”or it could be,”What an excellent shirt you are wearing,where did you get it from?or”It’s so hot,but you are looking so fresh.”or”Availability of cold mineral water bottles has really relieved the passengers.”

Again,you have to choose speaking what kind of remark is going to help you the most.

Yes,just by being aware of what you are going to say
may bring a lot of difference in your thinking pattern.It can really change your attitude from negative to positive.

Great ancient Indian Politician & Philosopher Chanakya very rightly said approximately 2500 years ago,”jihvayattou
vriddhivinashou” which states that it is your speech that can take you to the heights of success & prosperity & it is the same speech that can be the cause of your failure& destruction.Then he also said,”swargam nayati soonritam”which means that if the words uttered by you are true & full of politeness, then road for heaven is open for you.

How true! if you just watch what you speak,no one can stop you from being successful & positive in life .

Is it necessary to control your thoughts?Yes,because if you are unable to control your thoughts,your thoughts start controlling you.And,when this happens quite often,you are unable to complete your targets,you are unable to perform,you don’t get the desired results in your life.

Thoughts are generated in your mind to guide you or You can generate your thoughts as per your aims and targets.Suppose you are not able to control your desire to watch T.V. more than the stipulated period while you need to perform some important tasks related to your aims and targets then, when, you are exhausted after watching the T.V.,you regret that you have wasted the valuable time and then,the same of question arises ,”Is T.V. for me or I’m for T.V.”

At that particular moment, you are forced to think whether GOD has given you this human life mainly for watching T.V.

Similarly,whenever your mind wanders here and there and you know that you are wasting time by thinking unwanted thoughts, ask yourself a question,”Can I control my thoughts?”And when you get an answer in affirmative,start thinking the thoughts which take you towards the direction of you aims,targets and goals.

It is very important to cultivate total awareness about what you think.Ok! let’s examine what is going to happen if you are not aware of what you are thinking?

If you are thinking about you past failures and worrying or, if you are thinking about some mishap which took place in the past you couldn’t do anything about or if you are regretting the unpleasant behaviour in a past event from someone ,then what are you achieving?


Similarly,if your mind is wandering unrealistically in future or,if you are dreaming about some future event without assigning any time limits to them,or if you are having the imaginations of teaching someone a lesson just because you are prejudiced against him and you want to get even with him,then what are you achieving?

But,if you are aware that whatever you are thinking is taking you towards your specified
Goals, Aims and Targets, then you could said to be living in the present.If you are able to “ Watch what you think”,if you are able to apply a filter to your mind so that your thoughts are more & more matured and streamlind towards your aims and goals nothing will be impossible for you and you will be able to achieve the highest results in your life.

During the day after every 60 minutes, ask yourself “Are my thoughts taking me towards my specified Targets ,Aims and Goals?”

If at any particular time you find that your thoughts are not in accordance of your Aims,Goals and Targets,then streamline your thoughts immediately and start thinking about your Goals, Aims and Targets and analyse whether you are moving towards them or are drifting away from them.

BEAUTIFUL NATURAL PLACES & MEDITATION

Do you like to watch the scenes endowed with natural beauty?how do you feel when you are at a beautiful natural place(B.N.P.)?after a hectic & tense workday,just stop at a B.N.P. for 15 minutes & then go home,you’ll find that the behaviour of everybody at home is miraculously different.when you step inside your house, everybody is smiling at you.why?because,you are entering your house with a relaxwd look & with a smile at your face.

Now ,which forces are behind this miracle?yes,the five elements-prithvi(earth),jal(water),agni(fire),vayu(air) & aakash(ether).all the beautiful natural places(B.N.P.S) are made up of these five elements,isn’t it?

Whenever you are too stressed with your regular routine consecutively for six months or more,don’t you have an urge to go for a vacation at a B.N.P. for a change?and, once you reach the B.N.P.;be it a sea shore,or a beautiful garden loaded with flowers or a valley or a range of mountains or a riverside etc.,you start feeling as if you are a part of that B.N.P..

You ,at that particular moment, feel yourself as a part of that B.N.P. & you cannot even think of getting away from that spot.you like the place so much that you start taking photographs & when you come back,you make an album where these photographs are very carefully maintained.and ,you make sure that different albums are made for different trips.

And then,whenever you are stressed ,you just have a look at those phtographs of B.N.P.s & your memories are fresh again.and ,you again feel almost the same calm & relaxation which you felt during the trip.

One of my close friends was planning to build a house for his family & he went to an Architect cum Interior Designer.since he had ample land,more than half of it was kept for a beautiful lawn with a landscape.and inside a provision for huge wall sized sceneries of B.N.P.s were made.why?because,being close to nature(five elements)is our nature and brings us peace & calm.

Now ,the big question is why?why we always want to be so close to nature(five elements)?
Ok,when someone passes away,the dead body is cremated and it is said that the body is dissolved back into five elements.it is also said that body has gone back from where it had originally evolved.in fact,according to nyaya darshan,your five senses(nose,tongue,eyes,skin & ears) are directly evolved through five elements(earth,water,fire,air & sky).sounds strange?but,it is true.according to maharishi gautam ,the characteristics of five elements are same as the faculties of the five senses.and,he emphasises this truth through sutras 1/12,1/13 & 1/4 in nyaya darshan.

According to these sutras,

Smell(gandh) is the characteristic of earth(prithvi) & it is the faculty of nose(nasika).
Taste(ras) is the characteristic of water(jal) & it is the faculty of tongue(jivha).
Sight(roop) is the characteristic of fire (light) and it is the faculty of eyes(netra).
Touch(sparsh) is the characteristic of air(vayu) and it is the faculty of skin(twacha).
Sound(shabd)is the characteristic of ether(aakash) and it is the faculty of ears(kshotra).

Now it is evident that your senses are so closely associated with the five elements and this is the reason you like the vicinity of B.N.P.

Now,the big question is,”how can i use this knowledge for entering the state of meditation?”

If you close your eyes & start visualising a beautiful natural place,the place you liked the most out of many B.N.P.s visited uptil now,how would you feel?is ther any possibility that while visualising the B.N.P.,you might start feeling so relaxed that you start reaching subconscious level of your mind?

So,from now on,try to close your eyes after every two to three hours during the daytime and visualise a B.N.P. for two minutes.after you open your eyes,you will feel so calm & quiet that you will start looking forward to repeat the experience for longer periods.

CATCH THE PEOPLE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT



It is very easy to catch people doing something wrong and scold them publically.And,that’s what we usually do the whole day.We can easily find faults in our family members & thrash them.We can easily find faults in our peers & co-workers & complain about their wrong activities to higher ups.We can also find faults in our superiors & elders & grumble,because we sometimes can not tell their mistakes in their face.So,by being a hardcore faultfinder you are becoming unhappy & spreading unhappiness all around.Moreover,if you just keep finding faults in others & keep discussing others’faults all the time,what is the net result?You will find that those faults will start reflecting in you own behaviour.

Then,what is the remedy?Should we let all the wrong things happen all around & keep mum.By keeping mum should we spoil the discipline all around?

A very big industrialist was once being interviewed & was asked the secret of his success.he very humbly said that the secret of his success was that,”He catches the people doing something right & praises them publically”.In this way,his people are very loyal to him & he can rely on them.Moreover,he said that he kept introspecting himself every week for two hours on Saturday evenings & found his own faults.He,then,made efforts in removing his own faults before anyone else pointed out a finger at him.

Moreover,if he found faults in any of his employees or colleages,he simply talked to him in private.He said that he was follwing the rule for many years.”Praise publically & scold privately”.

And,it is logical too.Is there anybody on this earth who is free of faults?Can any human being be free of faults?If a human being becomes free of faults ,will he not be equal to God?

And,can you imagine a human being without no quality at all?Yes!each & every human being does possess
some qualities too.If each & every human being has some shortcomings in him ,then he possesses some qualities too.

So,if we thrash him for his shortcomings,if we can repeatedly insult him for his shrtcomings & faults,should we not praise him for his qualities?

And,when we praise someone publically,what happens?when we discuss someone’s positive qualities & attributes repeatedly ,these qualities start reflecting in our behaviour very soon.
Finally,if we have to scold people to maintain discipline ,let us first try to do so in private,so that ego of the other person is not hurt.But,if he does not improve in this manner,then in such a case we may have to scold him publically too.But,scolding publically should not be a regular practice.

FROM NEGATIVE TO POSITIVE


Everybody wants to remain positive all the time.Do you ever want to think negatively?Never,right!but,however positive you are,sometimes or the other,negativity creeps in & you tend to think negatively.Especially,if someone insulted you in the past
or if you failed miserably in some project.The thoughts of these incidences would never spare you.The complete incidence would be repeated again & again like a movie in your mind.You would feel the impact of all the five senses in that scene.The harsh words,the slap on your face,the sounds thus created,the tears in your eyes etc.etc.would be so vivid that it would be very difficult to get rid of stream of negative thoughts once it sets in your mind.

Is it possible to break this stream?Is it possible to convert the stream of negative thoughts into the stream of positive thoughts?

There is a sutra in Yog Darshan of Maharishi Patanjali
“vitarka badhane pratipaksha bhavanam” (2/33,yog darshan)
This states that whenever you have a negative thought or rather a chain of negative thoughts in your mind ,immediately start thinking of its opposite positive thoughts.Suppose,you are watching a mental movie with dialogues again & again with a lot of action replays and these scenes create a sense of hatred in your mind for a particular person,what should you do in such a situation?According to Maharishi Patanjali ,you should start thinking loving thoughts for that person.Love thoughts(positive) are opposite of hatred thoughts(negative).
Aren’t they?so,if you force your mind to think love thoughts for that person,the chain of negativity can be broken.Seems difficult?yes ,it does seem,but give it a try & this wonderful sutra will drag you out of negativity.

Let’s take another instance,”you have failed miserably in a project and are watching the replays of a mental movie depicting each & every wrong step taken by you again & again.”Does this thought pattern block your creativity for the present & the future?What should be done now?
Right!start thinking the thoughts of courage. Start a mental movie where you see yourself carrying out your activities courageously & confidently & suddenly you will realize that the chain of negativity has broken and a stream of positive thoughts has started inside your mind.

Once you succeed in the above practice of breaking the chain of negative thinking ,you start wondering how come was that possible which seemed impossible previously.How could i convert my thought pattern from negative to positive so easily?Then,one fine day you find the answer which is very well depicted by Maharishi Gautam in Nyaya Darshan through following sutra.

“yugpajgyananutpattirmansolingam”(1/16,nyaya darshan)
In this sutra,Maharishi Gautam tells us a unique characteristic of human mind.He says,”More than one streams of thought can not be originated in our mind at a single moment”In simpler terms ,our mind can think only one thought at a time.

“Oh!this does not seem practical.”You may quip.”My mind is always cluttered with so many things.So many thoughts are simultaneously running in my mind most of the time “
Were our ancient rishis mistaken?No,they were not.through another sutra ,Maharishi Gautam gives us the answer;
“alatchakravat ashugrahitwad”

Through this sutra ,he explains that since speed of thoughts is too much(maybe,more than even the speed of light),it seems that too many thoughts are running in our mind simultaneously.In fact,however,only one thought enters our mind at a particular moment,but because of excessive speed of thoughts it seems as if many thoughts are running simultaneosly in our mind.If you rotate a lighted torch,it seems as if there is a circle of fire.But,is it really so?No,it is because of the speed of torch,it seems as if it is a circle of fire.Same is the case with the chains of thoughts in your mind.

So,you are lucky that your mind can think only one thought at a time & this one thought can eighter be positive or negative.And,once the chain of one kind of thoughts sets in, if you purposely think a thought of opposite nature,it is sure that a stream of positive thoughts can be initiated in place of a stream of negative thoughts.

AS IF PRINCIPLE

“AS IF”PRINCIPLE




This principle says that if you want to cultivate any quality in yourself such as fearlessness,confidence,love peace,happiness,enthusiasm,sense of humour,sense of security,hard work etc.,start behaving As If you already have that quality in you.Act”As If” you are facing a dreadful situation fearlessly and fear will go away out of you.Someone has very rightly said”Do the thing you fear & death of fear is certain.”.
Act “as if” you are full of confidence & lack of confidence will no more be there.
This principle is being used by us in our daily lives unconsciously:
You have had bitter arguement in your house with someone and your mood is off.You are lying in the dark room & may even be weeping.Suddenly,you get the information that one of your close friends has arrived.What should be done now?As soon as you come to know about the arrival of your friend,you jump out of the bed,go to the bathroom,wash your face & look into the mirror.Then, you give yourself a broad smile & start acting ‘As If’nothing has happened.You sit with your friend in the living room & start behaving ‘As If’ nothing wrong has happened.You start behaving ‘As If’ your mood was never off & you are perfectly normal.and,after an hour or so,when your friend leaves,your mood is back to normal.After the departure of your friend ,you don’t need to return to dark room .You behaved ‘As If’everything was normal & it became so in reality too.
You have to go to meet an important client or a very big official.You move from your home or office to start a tough journey.Roads are rough.There is a lot of sound pollution.You are stuck in a trffic jam.Because of such & other unforeseen circumstances,you don’t get time to relax before that important meeting starts.But,when you face that important person(client or official),how do you react?Do you have chance to tell him how much stress you have faced in the way?No!on the other hand you act ‘As If’you are not at all stressed.You act’As If’everything was normal.You act’As If’you are full of confidence.You act ‘As If’you have solved bigger problems in the past.You act ‘As If’
you have come across bigger & more important people in the past.and,what is the result?You win & meeting is successful.

So, to apply ‘As If’principle in your life in order to remain happy even under adverse circumstances,what should be done?To apply,’As If’principle,to can make ample use of “Positive Affirmations “and “Positive Visualisation”.

“Positive Affirmations” are ‘firm’ Positive Statements which are formed using “As If ‘principle.Thus,an affirmation should reflect ‘as if’ you are already very happy & want to remain happy in future too,irrespective
of your circumstances.

“There is no way to happiness,happines is the way.”


“Every moment of my life is full of enthusiasm,joy & bliss”

“I feel happy,I feel healthy,I feel terrific”

“Every Day,In every way,I’m getting better,better,better & better.”

These affirmations suggest ‘As If’you are already very happy & enthusiastic & as you keep repeating them,your life becomes full of enthusiasm ,joy & bliss.

When you keep repeating these affirmations alongwith the visualization in your mind with your eyes closed that you are smiling,you visualize that atmosphere around you is happy & healthy,you visualize a mental picture ‘as if’ you are happily and peacefully progressing in all the walks of your life,no one can stop you from achieving that.
